“FOOD SOVEREIGNTY, SELF SUFFICIENCY AND THE FAMILY FARM.” An International Seminar on the occasion of the 10th Anniversary of ICPPC.

Poland has a unique countryside – with very rich wild nature, beautiful landscapes, cultural traditions and many generations of farmers who love their work. It’s a national treasure. However decisions made in Brussels over the past decade have dramatically degraded the life and quality of the Polish countryside and its food. The protection of the natural wealth and diversity of the countryside and the food security of the nation is a vital issue for Poland, but so it is for all countries. In order to help realize the goal of protecting our countryside and food chain, we created in November 2000 the International Coalition to Protect the Polish Countryside (ICPPC). The coalition was initiated by 41 organizations from 18 countries.

Let’s stand up for raw milk rights

Congratulations to Michael Schmidt – the Ontario farmer who’s due in a Newmarket court today for the verdict on charges he violated the provincial Milk Act by selling unpasteurized milk – for standing up to the anti-raw-milk lobbyists. I am very aware of what he and his supporters are up against, having founded the Association for Unpasteurised Milk Producers and Consumers in the United Kingdom back in 1989 to prevent the British government’s proposed ban of unpasteurized milk – and again in 1997. We won our battle on both occasions, maybe because of the “and Consumers” factor and much press support.

International Resistance to the the Modification and Control of Life

Resistance comes in three shades: passive, occasionally active and active.
The corporate and political powers who aim to take a controlling influence over the food chain count on the majority of civil resistance being of a passive ‘dumbed down’ nature. They can tolerate a certain amount of ‘occasionally active’ interference in their master plan, but they do not tolerate genuinely active resistance. So those of us who hammer continuously on genetically modified corporate doors are monitored, harassed and generally marginalised by the prevailing ’status quo’ and its media poodles.

Saving the seeds of hoper – banning the seeds of despair

I thank you for the opportunity of speaking on this special occasion.

There could hardly be a more important issue confronting not just farmers, but the whole of society, than the subject of this meeting: how to grow adequate food and produce adequate energy without the aid of rapidly diminishing and highly polluting fossil fuels. And the reason why it is so important is because: this is not a concern for the future -it is the reality at this very moment. The transition from a 250 year old fossil fuel powered society to a genuinely sustainable renewable energy fuelled society is to be achieved in less than 25 years -if we are to avoid an ultimate meltdown of most of what sustains our present planetary ecology. That is not my prognosis but the increasingly broadcast view of the majority of professional climatologists from all around the world.

World Farmers Congress 2008

An international bi-annual event entitled “World Farmers Congress” is being held in Warsaw and surrounds 30 May to 7 June 2008. Neither ICPPC nor the Coalition for a GMO Free Poland have been invited.

Who is behind this event?

Two organisations have their names prominently featured: The International Federation of Agricultural Producers (FIPA) and The National Union of Farmers, Circles and Agricultural Organisations (KR). Both these organisations support mainstream, agrichemical/GMO farming practices and trading commodities on the global “free” market. The programme, which can be accessed on Google (type in world farmers congress) includes a presentation from Robert Zoellick, President of the World Bank; Crawford Falconer, chairman of the Agricultural Negotiations Committee of the World Trade Association and Donald Tusk.

Letter from India

Good morning all – and a happy new year!

We have just returned from a short study tour in India, part of which included looking into the possibility of establishing an exchange programme between Polish and Indian farmers.

Upon arrival at Delhi international airport, we elected to take a motorised rickshaw to our hotel. The driver of this little brightly painted three wheel scooter (known fondly as a ‘tuk tuk’) charged into the ensuing fray, dodging and weaving his way through the dense traffic, frequently coming within centemitres of hitting one of the hundreds of the similarly engaged vehicles battling their horn blasting way down the worn New Delhi streets. Streets also shared with Brahmin cows and packs of stray dogs. It is a very particular initiation.
