GMO Act: Polish parliament debate

Dear Friends,

Thanks to your superb support, which, in combination with Polish efforts, led to more than 40 parliamentarians raising critical questions about the planned new GMO Act during the parliamentary reading and debate on 16th December. This was enough to force the debate to be prolonged into February 2010. At that point it will have to go through both the agricultural and environment committees, both of which will have to ratify the act for it to become law.

While we have not achieved 'a ban', what has emerged is a stalling of the government's intentions. This will buy us a little more time to try and persuade members of the agricultural and environment committies to think again - and to take the 'precautionary' route - via introducing a ban of the GM maize MON 810 and ensuring that Poland is not subjected to a dysfunctional Act of Parliament that would allow 'special zones' for planting GM crops and 'co-existence' between GM and non GM crops.

Parliamentarians complained that they had received hundreds of emails on this subject that jammed their computers. This is a great endorsement of everyone's efforts - East and West of the Channel! Hope springs eternal...

Doctors Call for Moratorium on GM Foods

The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) has raised serious concerns about the safety of GM foods on human health and has called for an immediate moratorium on such foods. [read more]

CYPRUS collected more than 78,000 signatures for a petition to ban GMOs

The Federation of Environmental and Ecological Organizations of Cyprus (FEEO) collected more than 78,000 signatures for a petition to ban GMOs in Cyprus, UE and worldwide. Cypriots wrote: 'We request the Commission to consider and respect the Cypriots will, to ban GMOs. We strongly support the amendment of EU legislation in order to allow member states to ban GMOs in their territory.' Such a small Cyprus but with great fighting spirit.

First call for an ANTI GMO SUMMIT in Poland to counteract GMO CONGRESS.

Draft programme for a ANTI GMO SUMMIT "Genes are not for Sale: Call for 10 years Moratorium on GMOs", 16th-17th October 2008, Poland

This will be a two day event:

9:30 am to 14:30 pm: 'Summit Conference', Wawel, Krakow.
15:00 pm "Protest" and a press conference in Krakow !!
16:30 travel to Kalwaria or Tyniec (35-50 kilometres from Krakow)
12:00 introductory sessions concentrating on "saving seeds" and "pan european moratorium/ban"

9:30 am to 11:30 am: sessions concentrating on "saving seeds" and "pan european moratorium/ban"
12:00 am to 2pm session: strategy for "pan european moratorium/ban" and co-operation
2pm lunch: Polish traditional table.
3 pm to 4 pm: summary/ ends.
