"Urgent call to save European Food and Farming" Concerning: MOTION FOR A EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT RESOLUTION on Biotechnology: Prospects and Challenges for Agriculture in Europe. (2006/2059 (INI)) Dear Sir/Madam, Since December 4th 2006 thousands of European Union citizens have written to you demanding to know why you are supporting the further spread of GMO in Europe. I am one of them. But I still have not received any answer! Or I received an automatic notice: "Message deleted without reading." This leads me to the conclusion that you forgot that you are answerable to your electorate and I want to kindly remind you that this is a betrayal of democratic accountability. The reason for of our concern is the motion submitted by Finnish MEP Kyösti Virrankoski, currently being debated in the Agriculture Committee. The author makes an attempt to convey an unproven, experimental and potentially dangerous technology, as a panacea for the future of food, farming and medicine. The paper is so misleading and lacking in independently verifiable facts that, in our view, it should be rejected in it's entirety. Please keep in mind that approximately 80% of European citizens have said 'NO' to GMO food and farming in independent opinion polls conducted over the past 5 years and that this also translates into a call for the complete rejection of Mr Virrankoski's motion. As I am sure you are aware, all efforts to influence government and public opinion to accept GM technology are sponsored by GM corporations and we are asking you to recognise this and to act independently of such influences. The recent scandal of large volumes of conventional rice contaminated by genetically modified rice from US field trial experiments, exposes one more time, the ever present danger of allowing any production and processing of GM crops and gives further weight to calls for a complete GMO ban in Europe. There is an urgent need, in line with the International Convention on Biodiversity and many other European environmental measures,  for the reorientation of current GM research and development funds towards the enhancement of diverse and ecological management systems that maintain and improve the long term fertility and overall health of our native soils, plants, animals and people. We urge you to reject the motion and to support the establishment of GMO Free Europe. Yours sincerely,
